HAT POINT FERRY TERMINAL
AMI Consulting Engineers worked closely with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to redevelop a ferry terminal at Hat Point Marina in Grand Portage Minnesota. Site improvements will include rebuilding the ferry terminal dock, public docks, ticketing and restroom building, parking lot improvements, electrical upgrades and the relocation of the existing boat ramp.
The existing ferry terminal dock is deteriorated and unsafe for use. The proposed plan is to demolish and expand the ferry docks to provide two safe harbor terminals for the Isle Royal ferries. The site is also currently unpaved and existing buildings do not have capacity for the current ridership and employees. The existing buildings onsite will be demolished and replaced with a larger permanent building that will have seating for 200 ferry terminal riders, associated restroom facilities, concession area, ticketing area, two ferry terminal offices, and storage for both the concessions and ferry use. The current boat ramp is heavily deteriorated and is currently interfering with the ferry boat operations. The proposed boat launch will be re-located to an area adjacent to the new docks which will provide wave protection and minimize interference with ferry boat operations.
AMI worked closely with the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC) & the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to secure approximately $3.3 Million Dollars through the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) to support the redevelopment of the ferry terminal. AMI provided preliminary layouts, 3D renderings, engineering reports & cost estimations in support of the EDA grant.
