AMI Consulting Engineers, PA was hired by the Saint Paul Port Authority to design replacement docks for Barge Terminal #1, located on the Mississippi River. Due to funding restrictions and grant cycles, this project is being completed in two phases. This dockage is used for the transfer of aggregates, salt, bulk liquids, recycling materials and other bulk goods from barges. This project included the replacement of 1,084 feet of new steel sheet pile wall, anchorage of dockage system, design of specialty cap for use with barge activity, mooring rings, fender systems and site filling & grading. The project was designed to withstand the rigors of Minnesota winter ice, spring flowage and river flooding. Construction occurred during the off season to avoid interference with barge operations. Design was preceded by AMI’s inspection of underwater and topside structural conditions. AMI engineers reviewed the available documentation, dove the site and recorded the findings. AMI excavated test pits to further confirm the original construction of the wall, tie backs and anchor pile conditions. AMI prepared complete phased construction drawings, specifications, bid forms and engineers estimates. AMI also provided complete project and construction management. These services included bidding assistance, bid review, contractor selection, product verification, shop drawing review, pay application review, field verification, construction overview work, general project oversite, field engineering, site meetings, status reports, and project acceptance & closeout.
