CONCRETE BIN MODIFICATIONS

AMI was contracted to provide the design and detailing of a modification to the hopper of a 400-ton bin. The geometry of the new hopper section was selected by a material handling consultant. AMI determined pressures from stored material and analyzed the hopper with state-of-the-art finite element software to provide an efficient design for a bolt-up installation. 3D scans were used to determine procedures for fit-up of new to existing. AMI provided designs for modifications to existing conveyors, new chute work, a new pin-gate and modifications to the structure. We utilized the 3D scan and modeling to verify clearances and avoid fit-up interferences with new and existing.

Flying the hopper sections into place was a challenging aspect of this project. Limited clearance and confined working conditions required thorough planning to execute successfully. AMI used 3D sequencing software to develop an installation concept in partnership with the contractor. This limited down time by identifying critical clearance areas and provided an opportunity to adjust the design and construction planning accordingly.

AMI created the scope of work and coordinated with contractors during the bidding process to create a competitive bid process that encouraged contractor buy-in. By focusing on the installation process, we were able to ensure minimal down-time and tight controls on construction costs.
