CABIN REBUILD aND SHORELINE RESTORATION ON LAKE SUPERIOR

AMI Consulting Engineers, PA was contacted by the Owner to provide coastal, marine civil, and building structural engineering design solutions for their non-conforming lot in Two Harbors, MN. AMI performed an initial site visit to determine the extents of the shoreline damage and document the existing cabin condition and dimensions. Following the site visit, a proposal was submitted to the Owner to perform the following services: topographic surveying, shoreline and building permitting, shoreline and building engineering/drafting and special inspections.

Once the conditions of the proposal were approved, AMI surveyed the property to the extents required for engineering and permitting. AMI recommended a concrete curb anchored to the bedrock with armor stone along the slope to prevent further shoreline erosion. Native vegetation will be planted above the stone to protect the rest of the slope from runoff erosion during heavy rain events. Stone steps were integrated into the shoreline protection to allow easy access to the water. AMI completed two variance requests through Lake County to allow for a basement addition and modifications to the old cabin dimensions which would bring it up to the current building code requirements. Permits for the work to alter the shoreline and rebuild the cabin were submitted to the county, MNDNR, and Army Corp. of Engineers. AMI provided the Owner with required documentation from the permitting agencies following the approved permits.

Nordic Group (AMI’s Sister Construction Company) has completed installing the shoreline protection, install of the new septic holding tank, and is currently working on finishing the building. During construction, AMI performed special inspections during the installation of critical components of the design to document any adjustments or field engineering performed. Once the construction work is completed, AMI will perform a final walk through with the Owner and Contractor to make sure all items were completed as discussed and if additional work was required.
