Material buildup on the bottom of harbor floors can be caused by naturally deposited sediments or man-made debris. How does this happen? Lake and river currents transport sand and silt depositing it in navigational channels and docking facilities. In addition, docking and tugging activities cause propellor wash from ships and tugs.

AMI owner Chad Scott discovers severe corrosion in Duluth-Superior Harbor during a routine inspection, with steel structures deteriorating at an alarming rate. To address the issue, a collaborative effort between University of Wisconsin Sea Grant, the port authority, and engineers is launched. Studies explore protective coatings and innovative methods like jackets and cathodic protection systems, aiming to prolong the lifespan of steel structures.
The International Great Lakes Datum (IGLD) is a vital vertical reference for measuring water levels across the Great Lakes. Currently, we use IGLD 1985, but will be updated with the new International Great Lakes Datum 2020 (IGLD 2020), expected in 2025.
AMI utilized a three-man commercial dive team to inspect three reservoirs, BB (500,000 Gal.), D (75,000 Gal.) and E (125,000 Gal.) at Mount Rushmore.
Steel sheet piling in the Duluth-Superior Harbor is corroding at an unusually accelerated rate. This rate of corrosion is similar to that commonly observed in saltwater ports, but not seen in freshwater environments. In addition, corrosion to this extent has not been documented in other Great Lakes ports and harbors. Based on observations of both older and new sheet pile installations, the increased rate of corrosion appears to have begun in the late 1970s.

AMI team members took an hour out of their day for a playground cleanup around the the greater Lincoln Park Area. They collected four BIG bags of trash, a chair, an ottoman, and a cat house. The City of Duluth provided all clean up supplies.
