When aging ferry infrastructure at a critical Lake Superior gateway no longer met safety or capacity needs, AMI partnered with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to deliver a comprehensive 5-acre, terminal redevelopment plan.
AMI Consulting Engineers worked closely with the Band to plan the redevelopment of the ferry terminal at Hat Point Marina in Grand Portage. The project included rebuilding the ferry terminal dock and public docks, relocating the existing boat ramp, upgrading electrical systems, and improving parking and site circulation. The deteriorated ferry dock required demolition and expansion to provide two protected harbor terminals supporting Isle Royale ferry operations.
The redevelopment plan replaced undersized, aging facilities with a new permanent terminal building designed to accommodate current and future ridership. The proposed building included seating for approximately 200 passengers, restrooms, ticketing and concession areas, terminal offices, and operational storage. The design positioned the relocated boat launch to the new docks to improve wave protection and minimize conflicts with ferry traffic.
AMI collaborated with the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission and the Band to secure approximately $3.3 million in funding through the U.S. Economic Development Administration and supported the grant effort with preliminary layouts, 3D renderings, engineering reports, and cost estimates.
